We open weekend getaways section with this entry about visiting the Aigüestortes National Park and the Sant Maurici Lake.
This natural park is located in the Catalan Pyrenees.
Although sometimes it can be a bit confusing to know what areas to visit if you want to make a weekend visit.
So in this post I will try to clarify.
How to get to the natural park?
To get to the natural park both by private and public transport you can do it through two different areas:
To the east from the town of Espot.
This is the main town from where you can directly access the lake of Sant Maurici.
West from Boí – Taüll
These villages, very popular for having churches of very characteristic Romanesque architecture, is another of the main access points to the natural park.
Although from here you cannot reach the lake of Sant Maurici in one day, you can access another beautiful park park full of other lakes and mountains.
Can't I choose one of the two villages and move to the other by car?
By power, you can, but you will waste a lot of time. If you only go for a weekend, I recommend that you choose one of the two places.
Now let's see how to organize a weekend for both options.
Option 1: Lake of Sant Maurici from Espot or Esterri d’Àneu
The main accesses to reach the lake of Sant Maurici are made through Espot.
So to stay we will choose an accommodation near Espot or d'Esterri d’Àneu if we go with our cocktail
Where to stay in Espot or Esterri d’Àneu?
We spent the weekend staying at Ponet house.
And I highly recommend it.
In Booking you have a 9’8 score.
It is a private apartment with fully equipped kitchen, living room and two single rooms.
The cleanliness of the apartment is impeccable.
And the staff is very very friendly.
They were awaiting our arrival and made some recommendations to visit or eat that I did not know before arriving and that I will tell you later.
It cost us the weekend € 180 booking with Booking for two nights and 4 people.
So the price was € 45 per person two nights.
You can see the price and book by clicking here.
I highly recommend it! We were delighted to be here.
In addition, as it is a complete apartment, you can take your breakfast or lunch and save something in lunch and dinner if you want to make an economical getaway.
What to see in a weekend in Espot, Esterri d’Àneu or València d’Àneu
We arrived on Friday afternoon.
After settling in the Ponet house, we take the opportunity to stroll around València d’Àneu.
We were enjoying the tranquility of the town and its inhabitants.
Then we had dinner in the apartment and spent some time drinking something in the street, as is traditional in the villages 🙂
How to get to the lake of Sant Maurici
The next day after having breakfast in the apartment and having coffee at the Felip bar, we took the car and went to Espot.
If you go with your car, you can park either at the entrance of Espot or in a parking lot that is closer to the lake of Sant Maurici.
Both parkings are free.
If you want to walk up, I recommend you do it in the parking lot above once you have passed the town of Espot.
If you are going to take a taxi from Espot to the lake, you can park at the entrance of Espot.
The price of the taxi is € 5'50 per journey from Espot to l´estany de Sant Maurici. The journey lasts between 10 – 15 minutes and is done in about 4 × 4 that can accommodate up to 8 people. It is fun!
If you want to take a short excursion and enjoy the scenery, you can make the route between the lake of Sant Maurici and the waterfall of la ratera.
It is a very easy road, perfect if you want to enjoy the scenery and the views of the lake and take a small excursion.
It is marked as that the route lasts 30 minutes, but it took us a little longer since we were going very slowly, taking many photos, drinking from the sources.
After a stretch of climb and stairs, we arrive at the Ratera waterfall.
And down we continue to take pictures of the lake.
The truth is that the photos are beautiful, but the scenery in person is spectacular.
Taxis meet every hour to get down to Espot.
We took a walk through Espot to visit the village, we visited the supermarket and, as the heat tightened, we decided to return to the apartment to eat and rest.
After eating in the apartment and resting for a good while, about 6 pm we went to visit some of the recommendations they gave us when we arrived at the Ponet house apartment.
Without a doubt, the surprise of the weekend
I didn't know anything about this waterfall until they mentioned it to me.
How to get to the Gerber waterfall
You have two options to arrive: one shorter and one longer.
At 10 minutes by car from Valencia D’Àneu you can reach a curve where you can leave the car.
From here you can do walking in 10 minutes to the viewpoint of the waterfall.
It is a very easy path to follow.
The longest option is to take an hour's walk through the forest of Gerdar. Park here follow the signposted path.
Són and the viewpoint of the d’Àneu valley
After visiting the waterfall we continue on the road by car and go up to the town of Són.
This town is at the top of the valley, and is even quieter than València d’Àneu or Esterri.
On a curve you can park the car and enjoy the views of the valley and the village d'Esterri from the heights.
Finally, we went for a walk in Esterri d’Àneu.
Where to dine at Esterri d’Àneu
After taking a leisurely stroll through the old town of Esterri d'Aneu, we decided to go to Sherry Burger for dinner.
It is very easy to find and is a very popular site in the town.
The hamburgers are meat of various types: veal, chicken, foal, rabbit … and with vegan options.
The hamburgers are very good so if you like them, it is a good place to go to dinner.
Afterwards, the weather got a bit ugly and threatened rains, so we went to the apartment to rest.
For Sunday we planned other activities such as visiting the Montcortés pond and taking a bath or the Sant Antoni pond.
But the day got rainy so we decided to return soon to avoid caravans.
And that is all for now!
In another entry I will tell you how to visit the other side of the park from Boí or Taüll and spend a great weekend.
I hope the entrance will help you and encourage you to visit this area!
