Food may have an expiration date or preferred consumption date. The former can be harmful to our health if we consume them out of date, the latter do not endanger it. But what are they?

This morning my oldest daughter was going to have toasted bread and breakfast, and when she took the package she saw that the preferred date of consumption was several days ago. I told him that nothing was wrong because he ate the bread a few days later, but afterwards, I was struck by the question of whether what he was saying was right or wrong.

That is why I have dived on the Internet first, to know the difference between expiration date and preferential consumption, and second, to know the foods that are safe for consumption even if their date has already been fulfilled.

The Date of Expiry Indicates when a food ceases to be safe for consumption from a health point of view. From that date the product should not be ingested. It is used in very perishable products such as meat, fish, vacuum products or pasteurized.

The preferred consumption dateOn the contrary, it indicates to what date the food keeps its properties intact, as long as the container has not been opened. From that date, the product begins to lose some of its physical qualities, but its consumption remains safe.

The OCU (Organization of Consumers and Users) offers us the list of the ten foods with preferred consumption date that do not pose any problem for our health if they are consumed out of date while they are not open or present containers whose deterioration is evident. The taste they may have may or may not vary depending on the product but

No problem to consume these 10 foods with preferred consumption date days or weeks later, while they are not open or show signs of being damaged. Of course, they may have worst taste or texture:



Potato chips and nuts.

Buns and cookies.

Soft drinks and alcohol.

Pasta, rice and legumes.

Jam and butter.

Sausages and cured cheeses.

Soups and sauces envelope.

Tomato containers.

On the other hand, there are foods that have neither expiration date nor preferred consumption date, such as: alcoholic beverages with a graduation greater than 10% of the volume; fresh fruits and vegetables; Bread and pastries for consumption in 24 hours, vinegar, salt, sugar, chewing gum … That does not mean that they spoil over time, but have no obligation to carry an expiration date.
